The Aronia Fruit

Aronia or aronia melanocarpa, known as “black chokeberry and their products, have attracted much scientific interest in recent years. According to studies, Aronia has very high concentration of polyphenols and more particularly flavonoids such as anthocyanins and tannins. Flavonoids contained or otherwise known as natural antioxidants- vitamin P are found in Aronia berry in very high levels, the highest recorded on the scale ORAC. (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity), a method of measuring antioxidant capacities in biological samples in vitro.

The extremely high content of the biologically active substances wins Aronia berry the leading position.


Genus: Name comes from the Greek word “aria” the name for a species of “Sorbus” of which the fruits resemble chokeberry.
Specific epithet comes from the words melano meaning black and carpa meaning fruit in reference to the ripe fruits of this shrub.
The common name of chokeberry is in reference to the tart and bitter taste of the fruits which are technically edible but so astringent as to cause choking in most of those who try.
